PROJECT OVERVIEW

Tunnel Hack​ is a 2-player game built on Oculus Rift S and Makey Makey. Players play as 2 agents cooperating to steal all treasures in a pipe map. One player will be playing in VR environment as the agent who goes into the well-protective tunnels to travel through and collect the treasures, and the other will be playing through 2D control screen as the monitoring agent supporting with energy and visions based on Makey Makey.

MY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Led level design and interaction design

  • Ran usability tests and analyzed feedback

  • Created 2D art assets and VFX video for game narrative

  • Created V.O. and sound effects with Adobe Audition and Logic Pro X

  • Held daily meeting and keep everyone updated with the progress

DESIGN CHALLENGES

  • Create meaningful collaboration and communication between 2D and 3D players

  • Ensure variety of interactions for the 2D player

  • Clarity about the characters, their powers, and the story background

SOLUTIONS

  • I designed asymmetrical powers for 2 players and make sure they balance each other out. For example, the 3D player can slash the drones but only 2D player knows their location. The communication can also keep both of them engaged.

  • Created both physical (cardboard + Makey Makey) and digital interface for 2D player.

  • I combined the tutorial video with the story, and created a video message from the boss with futuristic-styled VFX. The video set the tone of the experience and also add clarity to characters and gameplay.
